how many cucumbers have you eaten today?

Cucumbers really are the perfect hot weather food. We're eating them pretty much constantly at our house - in salads, on sandwiches and just munching on them in the field. 'Lemon' cucumbers are just perfect for eating like an apple.

But I have to say, 'Boothby's Blond' cucumbers are my new favorite. I like to harvest them small - no more than 3" long - so the skins are nice and tender (no peeling necessary). You'll probably see a lot of Boothby's cukes at the markets this summer because they're being grown by several local farmers as part of the RAFT Grow-Out of heirloom vegetables, coordinated by Chefs Collaborative.  I hear they make great pickles, too!

July 6 field report

Current weather conditions on the farm: 100 degrees with increasing humidity. The soil is bone dry, and actually hot to the touch (too hot for bare feet). I'm inside drinking electrolytes, thinking about going back outside to set up more drip irrigation lines. I've been watering pretty much non-stop for the last four days, hoping to keep plants alive through this heat. So far so good.

Walking the tomato rows looking for signs of anything suspicious, I just saw the first Sun Gold cherry tomato starting to turn orange.Yippee! No signs of any color on any of the other varieties yet, but that's not surprising. Sun Gold usually ripens first.

Over the weekend, I started harvesting zucchini and summer squash. So far, my favorite is an Italian variety called 'Verde Chiaro', a pale green zucchini I ordered from Turtle Tree Seed. Another pale green squash called 'Magda' (a Lebanese "cousa" squash) is also doing very well - lots of fruit coming in fast.

Cilantro and parsley are growing like crazy, so I'll bring plenty with me to the market on Thursday - maybe I'll bring some easy hot weather recipe ideas too . . .

With any luck, I'll finally be able to post some new photos soon! I got a new camera because my old one stopped working a few weeks ago. The old one had been around for a while. Maybe it was just tired, or - more likely - maybe it got dirt stuck inside it somewhere. Now I just need to learn how to use the new one . . .
