FARM NEWS:
We had a great turnout for the potato digging party last Wednesday. By noontime we had dug 350 pounds of potatoes, and we had so much fun! Great work potato diggers! Now the potatoes are curing in the barn and we're making plans for another digging party to finish up the rest of the harvest.

Although we're still very much in the midst of the summer harvest, the big farm tasks of the fall season are already on our minds. The onions, winter squash, and pumpkins will need to be harvested and cured, fields cover cropped, garlic planted. We just ordered seed garlic, and this week we'll be filling the hay loft with straw, which will be used to mulch the garlic, strawberries, and perennial beds before winter. The cold storage room construction is underway, and we are making plans to put up another hoophouse.

The Farm Store has been busier than ever, and we've recently added some new items to the mix:
  • Sausage: Hot Italian Pork Sausage from Harrison's Poultry Farm in Candia, NH
  • More Eggs: In addition to our own eggs, we're also offering eggs from Harrison's Poultry Farm
  • Bread: Baguettes, Focaccia, and Loaves (Whole Wheat Multigrain, and Cinnamon Swirl) from Life Is Sweet Baking Company - on Saturdays
  • Sweet Treats: Carrot Cake Muffins from Blue Moon Evolution (made with our carrots) - on Saturdays

a favorite late summer recipe

Our green and yellow beans are piled high in the Farm Store this weekend, and they are gorgeous!   Put these together with some cherry tomatoes, some basil, and the potatoes we just dug this week and you'll have almost everything you need to make this delicious recipe from Eggs On Sunday

Summer Recipe: Warm New Potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, and Green Beans with Basil

2 lbs small new potatoes, halved
4 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 lb slender green beans, trimmed
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1/3 cup chopped fresh basil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Toss potatoes and 2 tbsp oil on a large rimmed baking sheet, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast until tender, stirring occasionally, about 50 minutes. Maintain oven temperature.

Meanwhile, cook green beans in a large saucepan of boiling salted water until crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain beans, pat dry.

Place beans, tomatoes, and garlic in a large bowl. Add 2 tbsp oil, sprinkle w/salt and pepper and toss. Add to potatoes on sheet. Roast until tomatoes begin to break down, about 8 minutes. Sprinkle with basil and serve.

Serves 6.

tomato season

It's hard to believe it's August already. We're getting fall crops planted, thinking ahead to what the pumpkin harvest might look like, when the onions will be ready for curing, and whether we might try overwintering some carrots this year.

pumpkins and winter squash growing and growing!
But honestly, with tomato harvest underway, it's hard to think about much of anything else . . . the unrivaled Sun Gold cherries, juicy Green Zebras eaten in the field, slow-roasted plum tomatoes, giant Brandywine BLTs, gorgeous heirloom tomato mozzarella salads.  It's tomato season, and we are dedicating ourselves to enjoying every minute of it. We hope you are too!

For those of you who are wondering where the chickens went, they are enjoying some time up on top of the hill, scratching and foraging their way across a new field where we plan to grow vegetables next year. Soon they'll continue their pasture rotation back down the hill to the future orchard/berry patch.
